Our vision

Sustainability is the theme where it is all about now. Recycling, sustainable innovations, working in a circular way and continuously reducing the CO2 footprint: this is also a priority at Hordijk.

CEO Rik Hennink: "We are constantly looking for more sustainable alternatives. We closely follow the developments in the market. In 2022, Hordijk will have existed for 100 years. A good time to look back and ahead. We speak to CEO Rik Hennink about Hordijk's vision of the future. If it were up to him, Hordijk would be an international supplier of innovative packaging, a producer of sustainable greenhouse greenhouses and related products in food & agri, now and in the future.

Man, environment and economy

Nobody can predict the future, but we can set ambitious goals. Rik: "This has everything to do with our values; connecting and sustainability. And with our mission to offer new, sustainable packaging solutions to customers. When making business decisions, we use the opportunities that contribute to a better environment and optimal well-being of our colleagues and society." For example, Hordijk is currently making its packaging solutions as recyclable as possible. "We make our greenhouses from high-quality material that responds in a sustainable way to the worldwide growth in fresh horticultural products. And we deploy our people with attention to commitment, safety and their development. We are also looking for internal connections.

Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)

We have to become more sustainable. That's what Hordijk thinks too. And that's what we do. By using plastics in particular. "Looking at the whole Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), plastic packaging is often a more sustainable choice than other materials or no packaging at all. It is easy to recycle, has a long life, is easy to transport and prevents a lot of food waste. Because packaged food has a longer shelf life. But that doesn't mean that Hordijk sticks to plastic at all costs. "In 1966, after 44 years of using wood, we switched to thermoformed plastic packaging. We are facing the future with the same innovative drive. We are open to sustainable alternatives and closely follow the developments surrounding wood pulp, cardboard and other biological materials."

Looking ahead

Now that Hordijk has celebrated its 100th anniversary, we are looking ahead. With confidence and energy, we continue to build on the foundation we now have. "We are also expanding internationally. Our greenhouses go all over the world. That is only increasing, also for our packaging. We are facing the future positively. And we are doing so together with our colleagues and customers. That is also Hordijk," concludes Rik.
